TALADIDDLE
Konnakol meets Rudimental Drumming.

Claudio Spieler and Claus Hessler have developed a creative system for learning south Indian rhythms and playing them with rudimental type stickings. Claudio and Claus are world class players and teachers; the results of their collaboration is well worth investigating.

TALADIDDLE offers a beautiful pathway to combine South Indian rhythms and rudimental drumming. Konnakol can build a bridge between musical cultures and learning this language will help you to gain a deep understanding of rhythm and musical time. I m proud to teach Claudio and to see the great outcome of his collaboration with Claus Hessler.

Congratulations to Claus and Claudio for this wonderful book. I really enjoyed the rhythmic beauty behind each of the pieces presented. I also enjoyed the refined holistic approach that conveys both rhythmic cultures South Indian and Western Rudimental culture. I hope this book is of interest to the many musicians who are looking for ways to understand, but also to develop new rhythmic vocabularies and possibilities.

The world of Indian rhythms is a gold mine of potential for contemporary musicians. It has been little explored in western publications, aside from the odd print release and various academic PHD studies. Particularly for drummers and percussionists, this system has a massive amount to offer. It is therefore truly great to see Claus and Claudio bring this world together with the world of snare drum rudiments and create a truly unique publication. On one side of the coin they adapt snare rudiments to Indian rhythmic structures but, they also work the other way around and use rhythmic recitation to create unique versions of traditional rudimentary pieces. This book is a great addition to the small, but challenging list of books on the subject for drummers and is a big step towards building a new rhythmic vocabulary for drum set.

Claus Hessler and Claudio Spieler have embarked on an exciting voyage to bridge the worlds of South Indian konnakol and rudimental European drumming. Taladiddle enables snare drummers to enter the complex world of konnakol through rudimental Carnatic phrases and compositional repertoire. Claus and Claudio have carefully translated konnakol phrases to Western rudiments in a way that’s both functional and musical. Just as the konnakol language comes to life on the mridangam and other Carnatic percussion, we can now begin to hear the snare drum sing in solkattu. I’m excited to see how diverse drummers and percussionists creatively interpret the musical scores on their instruments and across genres. May the crosscultural journey begin!
